The Blurry Lines And Laws Of Dna Fingerprinting - 1598 Words

The Blurry Lines and Laws of DNA Fingerprinting Crime solving has come a long way since the P.I days, and with the extreme advances in biology and the sciences, forensics has integrated itself into criminology with a fervor. Starting around the 1980’s Scientist Sir Alec Jeffreys and his team first derived the process of DNA fingerprinting and realized the incredible tool they had at their disposal for anything from paternity testing to DNA evidence comparison at crime scenes. After Jeffreys’ DNA fingerprinting was used to put away a dangerous criminal with matched evidence, the process evolved using the technology of Poly Chain Reaction (PCR) and Gel Electrophoresis (The history of genetic fingerprinting). With this relatively easy system of DNA fingerprinting and the very small amount of easily collected DNA that can be used to develop a fingerprint, criminal convictions using DNA evidence and fingerprinting has become an integral part of crime scene investigations. An d it was with this increase in dependence upon DNA to solve crimes that the government began to institute more laws surrounding the collection of DNA from individuals facing arrest, convicted or otherwise. While DNA exoneration has come a long way in terms of technological advancements and uses, there is questionability as to what the government is utilizing in requiring mandatory DNA sampling and the further implications upon human rights as DNA becomes a staple of most criminal conviction cases. The Crucible Essays (415 words) - Salem Witch Trials, John Proctor

The Crucible The Crucible Can a person's opinion equal their fate? In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, John Proctor's stand in a society where opinion drove fate created ignominy towards him and his beliefs. First he hid his horrible sin inside, fearing the consequences. When he finally did, he was placed in a tangled labyrinth of feelings as to what his next action should have been. Lastly, it was Proctor's defiance and integrity in his own self that proved him stronger than the entire community of Salem. Proctor's tremulous feelings and general unease of the situation built up to his defining point of confession. Church and government came together to coercingly control Salem and its actions. Proctor saw this and feared, for diabolism was a practice unheard of. "You must understand, sir, a person is either with this church or against it - there be no road between. We live no longer in the dusky afternoon and evil mixed itself with good and befuddled the world. Now by God's grace the good folk and evil entirely separate." -Deputy Danforth John contemplated his actions and reached an influential decision towards what his fate would be - after all, he believed, he could control it. As he stated defiantly, "I want my life... I will have my life." After John confessed, he believed he had done Elizabeth and the children good, for they were the wellspring of his life. He would be free, accepted by Salem still. The powerful effect of his trial and disagreement and its conflicting with Salem's way of life had already left a silent yet profound mark on everyone. Knowing that imperfection lurked among the good folk, the government wished to announce to the world who the sinning man was. Proctor was paradox to this - he wished nor believed anything of the sort, as his name was the only thing left of him. The Church and government robbed him of everything else that could make him man - his honor, his morals, his shame. Towards the very end of his tribulation, he states: "I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs.. show honor now, show a stony heart and sink them with it!" Horrified, he could not accept anymore torture to himself. He thought he was free, nothing more to give. Yet for Proctor, it was too much. A line had to be drawn somewhere. That line was the good name of Proctor - and little did he know, his opinion would drive his fate out of Salem and into the horrors of death.

Global Warming Is False Essay Example

Global Warming Is False Essay Example Global Warming Is False Paper Global Warming Is False Paper The issue of global warming has become a hot topic in not only in American, but all over the world. For years, many politicians have evaded the issue of global warming. But now, all of a sudden, the Democratic Party vows to combat global warming. Now that the Democratic Party has majority in both houses on Congress, they have taken an emphasis over environmental issues, mostly involving global warming. On January 30th, 2007, Congress held its first hearing about global warming. What was concluded in that hearing was that global warming is a fact, and that it is caused by humans. AY Gore conveniently released a movie called Cute Inconvenient truth, a movie that showed AY Gore giving a speech about the Diffracts on global warming and its C]irrefutable repercussion. Just this past February, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a summary that blamed global warming on CO released into the atmosphere by humans. With scientist backing claims that CO is causing global warming, the majority of Americans have made the decision that global warming is in fact true. But what Americans are not exposed is the scientist that claim climate change is part of Earths cycle, and that it right on schedule. The EPIC found that the amount of CO in the atmosphere is causing the rise in temperature on Earth. This, in effect, is causing polar ice caps to melt, flooding Oceans with fresh water. The EPIC says that the flood of freshwater in the Ocean is causing weather patterns to change. But claim that the amount of CO in the air is causing global warming is not correct. Last year, Carleton University Professor Tim Patterson appeared before the Commons : Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development. He testified that there is no correlation between the CO levels and the Earths temperature. He states his findings that 450 million years ago the amount of CO in the atmosphere was over ten times greater than they are now, and during that time, the earth was experiencing its coldest period ever. How does the Earth heating have anything to do with the increase in CO if the Earth has been known to be cooling with high amounts of CO in the air? The EPIC and AY Gore have both stated that the polar ice caps are melting uh to global warming, noting that some scientist have never seen anything like this. In his movie, AY Gore shows a dramatic display of the ice caps in Antarctica melting and breaking off. Dry. Boris Windcheater, former marine researcher at the Geological Survey of F-inland says that the breaking of glacier walls in Antarctica is normal in the advance of a glacier. Windcheater explains, In Antarctica the temperature is low enough to prohibit melting of the ice front, so if the ice is grounded, it has to break off in beautiful ice cascades. If the water is deep enough icebergs will form. Another professor from the Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology at Stockholm University, Dry. WIBNI Carlen, says that the temperature in Antarctica is indeed rising, but only slightly. But he also claims that more snow in accumulating than melting off. In The Inconvenient Truth, AY Gore claims that over 200 cities and towns in Western American have experience all time records for temperature and that this is caused by global warming. According to a new study released by Dry. Roy Spencer, Principal Research Scientist at the University of Alabama, it is not uncommon for many towns, out of the thousands, to experience record setting weather. His data reveals that recent temperatures in America were not unusual. A scientific group focusing on Climate Variability and Mechanisms conclude that the Earths climate in the past 1 0,000 years is, is now known to have been highly unstable and prone to major, rapid changes, especially warnings, that occurred briefly within a few decades or less.. The scientific community has made major strides in documenting the history of leaning-decal scale climate change. In a paper that was published in Science Magazine, seven scientists concluded that the Earth is on a 1 500 year cycle. They found evidence by testing the carbon and beryllium isotopes in sediments that suggests the changes In surface winds and surface temperatures are caused solar output. They also found that the Earth has experience drastic temperature changes r oughly ever 1 500 years, dating back 1000 A. D. Two other scientists, Wolfgang Berger and Lurch von Radar, retrieved a 5,000 year old sediment from the Arabian Sea. It revealed an unnamed cold period before the Roman Empire, the 1 1 50-year Roman cycle, the 900-year Medieval cycle, and the beginning of the Modern Cycle. This means that the Earth has cooling cycles and warming cycles. They concluded that the Earth has been warming since 1 680, the lowest point of a cooling period called the Little Ice Age. With all the evidence the Government has been relaying that proves global warming to be true, why has a lot of information been left out?

Compare & Contrast essay between Malcolm X and Marthin Luther King

Compare & Contrast between Malcolm X and Marthin Luther King - Essay Example Many people contend their admiration to the way they preached about the rights of the blacks in America, and they have both preached on self-knowledge and having respect for African culture and history, since it is the basis for uniting blacks. Their beliefs were similar, and this was evident towards the end of their lives in the way they emphasized on having bride amongst the black as well as respecting us rather than hating one another. Their speeches informed the blacks that in order to attain freedom, they start by respecting one another, hence it reflected on the vision of men improving America. Malcolm X talked about Blacks hating the color of their skin, shape of their nose; overall, he talked about Blacks hating their own kind. Major points about the Blacks are that for the past four hundred years, the Blacks have been taught to hate their identity; the self-hatred resulted in a pervasive sin among many members of the Black community. He stated that one cannot hate the root o f the tree and not hate the tree itself; this made the Blacks feel inferior making them turn to other people to show them the way. Martin on the other hand talked about standing against a system that oppresses the Blacks, he emphasized that being nobody is not easy, therefore, that which was seen as black should shot be seen as ugly. Martin went ahead and talked about having a Negro freedom among all the Negros since enslaving the body involves enslaving the entire soul. Hence the Blacks should encourage themselves and not be ashamed of their past as slaves, but appreciate themselves as being black and beautiful. Both men have the same analysis that we have been taught to have ourselves, lack of belief in ourselves as Blacks, and the blacks should do something to offset this cultural homicide, as called by Martin. Both Malcolm and Martin called for the blacks to embrace the Black pride, develop self-affirmation and all the blacks to undergo education that will reflect the past histo ry of the Black people. In the larger world, they had other priorities except for internal priorities that were connected to the establishment of education, and Martin emphasized African-American unity by stating any movement present that is meant to overlook this necessity is only waiting to be buried. The work and life events of Martin Luther were stressed exclusively making the history taught in schools expressed in different ways (Weis and Fine 239). The manner in which Malcolm X and Martin spread their views was through assertiveness, powerful speeches that were hard hitting. To put it simpler, both the intentions of Martin and Malcolm were delivered in styles that were different. For example, Martin was an inspirational speaker, and he travelled all over the country motivating people to live a life full of racial harmony. Martin appeared to have idealistic mind and was rational and positive in giving his speeches and views on different things. This is evident in his speech tha t he said he had a dream of seeing his children living a life that they are not judged by their race but character. In comparison to Martin, Malcolm X was an extremist, and this is evident the time he was an Islamic Minister, X talked more about separating blacks from whites, emphasizing Black Supremacy and presence of nationalism among the Blacks. To look at this in
